Yesterday broke the news that Simone Verdi has injured his hamstring, and although Bologna have not yet set a date for when he will be back, the rumours are that he’ll be out for a considerable amount of time, with all four games in February most likely to be played without him.
This is a major setback for both Bologna and Verdi. He has only gotten better and better this season, with the performance against Benevento when he got three assists perhaps the pick of the bunch. For him then to become injured when crucial games are coming up against the likes of Fiorentina and Inter as well as games against teams Bologna should beat in Spal, Genoa and Sassuolo, is quite damaging to Bologna’s aspirations.
The numbers speak for themselves; Verdi has got 6 goals and 8 assists this season. No player in the league has a higher number of assists which is quite remarkable. However, his injury does give other players a chance to shine. Against Napoli, Roberto Donadoni decided to bench Mattia Destro at the expense of a more fluid front three of Verdi, Rodrigo Palacio and Federico Di Francesco. The latter two and Destro do make up quite the attack, and are the most likely to start against Fiorentina.
However, there are other options for Donadoni. Ladislav Krejci came in to replace Verdi when he went out injured, and although he failed to make a significant impact in that game, he is a player of quality who could do well for the club. César Falletti is another player who has not played much this season, and we could well be seeing him play more regularly now that Verdi is out injured.
In addition to those players already in the squad, Bologna have been rumoured to strengthen the squad in attack for some time now. The most regularly linked name has been Riccardo Orsolini, property of Juventus, but currently on loan to Atalanta. He has seen his opportunities limited this season in Bergamo, but Atalanta have been reluctant to let him go. Now, agreement has apparently been found between the three clubs, and he is rumoured to be on his way to Bologna. Orsolini is very much a player in the Verdi-mould, he has got great close-control, and is strongest with his left foot. If he were to sign it would not surprise me if he were to replace Verdi during his sting on the sidelines.
As we’re approaching the end of the transfer window, several transfers regarding Bologna are rumoured to happen. Stay tuned on Sempre Bologna for the latest transfer news.
